This is the studio of illustrator Julia Rothman and her husband, filmmaker Jan Oliver Lucks. But it is also a place for all of us - to be creative, meet other fun people, draw, dance, talk, experiment. The space is located at 543 Union St at Nevins in Gowanus, Brooklyn.

Eat, Draw, Do Good -It’s Taco Night! $40

Join us for an evening of drawing and also bring your appetite: it’s taco night! As part of our special series committed to the art of fighting the climate crisis with Dana Cowin of Progressive Hedonist, we will be eating our subjects. Santo Taco will be supplying a feast of vegetarian tacos with organic, heirloom ingredients grown on family-owned farms in Mexico.

We will start by sketching, painting or collaging the tacos, which are messy little works of art themselves, before part two, tasting them. All of the proceeds for this event will be donated to the Food Education Fund. Bring your own drawing materials.

As always, our guest will be in conversation with journalist Joshua David Stein.

This is part of a drawing night series celebrating unexpected subjects. Each event features someone with a unique craft or story and gives you a chance to draw them as they work or perform. It’s part interview, part figure drawing, and always something a little different. Please bring your own materials. Drinks provided. Ticket non-refundable.

Drawing from the Past: from Lucy, to Neanderthals, and beyond $35

Join us for a very special evening of drawing, observation, and human evolutionary history. Evolutionary biologist and research associate from the American Museum of Natural History, Dr. Julia Zichello, will bring a collection of hominin fossil skull casts and guide us through the fascinating story of our extinct ancestors. We will learn a bit about how they lived, evolved, and what their bones can tell us about the past.

Artists will have the chance to closely observe and draw the skulls while learning about the differences between species, changes in brain size and facial anatomy, and the clues scientists use to understand where we came from. All skill levels and art style are welcome, as always. Bring your own drawing supplies.
